Passive Electronic Components

Passive Components Products:

IBS Electronics is a leading distributor of passive components. As a broadline distributor, we have a very wide range of resistors, capacitors and inductors in various designs.
Passive components can't introduce net energy into the circuit. They also can't rely on a source of power, except for what is available from the circuit they are connected to. Components incapable of controlling current by means of another electrical signal are called passive devices. Resistors, capacitors, batteries, inductors, transformers, Inrush current Limiters / Thermistors, and even fuses, diodes are all considered passive devices.

Electronic passive components are fundamental building blocks in electrical and electronic circuits. They are called "passive" because they don't introduce energy into the circuit; instead, they store, manage, or dissipate electrical energy. Passive components are crucial for controlling and shaping electrical signals in various applications. Some of the most common electronic passive components include:

  1. Resistors: Resistors are perhaps the most basic passive components. They limit the flow of electrical current in a circuit. The resistance is measured in ohms (Ω). Resistors are used for various purposes, such as voltage division, current limiting, and signal conditioning.

  2. Capacitors: Capacitors store electrical energy in an electric field. They consist of two conductive plates separated by an insulating material called a dielectric. Capacitors can store and release energy over time, making them useful for smoothing out voltage fluctuations, timing circuits, and filtering signals.

  3. Inductors: Inductors are passive components that store energy in a magnetic field when current flows through them. They are often used for filtering out high-frequency noise, as well as in energy storage and impedance matching applications.

  4. Transformers: Transformers are used to change the voltage level of an alternating current (AC) signal. They consist of two or more coils of wire wound around a common iron core. Transformers are crucial in power distribution and voltage conversion.

  5. Diodes: While diodes can be used for signal processing, they are primarily considered active components when used as rectifiers or signal amplifiers. However, they are sometimes categorized as passive when used to protect circuits from reverse polarity or as clamping devices.

  6. Varistors: Varistors are voltage-dependent resistors used for surge protection. They have high resistance at normal voltages but quickly become low resistance when exposed to overvoltage conditions, thus shunting excess current away from sensitive components.

  7. Thermistors: Thermistors are temperature-sensitive resistors. Their resistance changes with temperature. They are used for temperature sensing and compensation in various electronic applications.

  8. Potentiometers: Potentiometers are variable resistors with a manually adjustable knob or slider. They are used for controlling parameters like volume, brightness, and voltage levels in circuits.

  9. RF Components: In high-frequency applications, passive components like RF filters, RF attenuators, and RF splitters are used to manage and control radio frequency signals.

  10. Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Components: Passive components can be integrated into printed circuit boards, often referred to as surface-mount devices (SMDs). These components include surface-mount resistors, capacitors, inductors, and other components that are soldered directly onto the PCB.
